My breeder has said that a small ram is better rated for growth than a larger ram I think is a better bet. Why do they say this?
SIL rates animals for genetic merit. When evaluating genetic merit, SIL adjusts performance for non-genetic effects such as age, birth-rearing rank, age of dam & mob. It then adjusts figures depending on how well relatives performed. So the smaller ram may have been smaller due to one of more of those non-genetic effects and/or it may have come from a family with better genetic merit than that of the larger ram on offer.
